Riding for the Disabled
RDA-Bukit Kiara was started in 1994 by Bukit Kiara Resort Berhad and some members who included the Royal partronage of YAM Raja Dato' Seri Azureen Sultan Azlan Shah. RDA-Bukit Kiara is a cooperative effort between Bukit Kiara Equestrian & Country Resort and volunteers, many of whom are riding members of the club. Horses/ponies from the Riding School are provided for use by the club, which also allows the use of its facilities for RDA activities.
Operationally, RDA-Bukit Kiara is run by a core team of volunteers. Sessions are held on Tuesdays (physically challenged riders) and Thursdays (riders with Down Syndrome or Autism) from 10am to 11am.
Volunteers help out as Lead Walkers (leading the horse) or Side Walkers (walking by the horse's side, providing support and encouragement to the rider). They also get the horses and riders ready for sessions, mount and dismount riders, as well as set up and clear away equipment. After a riding session, volunteers provide feedback to the instructors, who are also volunteers, on the progress of the riders.
Now and again, workshops are organised for volunteers on leading and side walking, grooming and tacking up a horse, etc. Volunteers can also obtain internationally recognised RDA qualifications.
